So the Summer Olympics are winding down this weekend. Originally I had been avoiding tuning in since I was so focused on work. Then one morning I made the mistake of flipping on the tv to see which events were on. Since then my tv has only been off when I’ve been asleep or out and about.
The events that I have been watching have been extremely exciting, filled with plenty of drama. It looks like the US is running away with the medal race which isn’t too surprising. Canada is doing pretty well too despite only winning 1 gold medal so far. The US has about 10 times as many people as Canada, but only about 6 times as many medals. Then there’s China. They have almost 40 times as many people as Canada, but only 5 times as many medals.
The women’s soccer game between Canada and the US was particularly intense. Those were some brutal calls on the tying goal. I don’t understand how such a lousy ref can get assigned to such an important game. It was satisfying to see them win bronze though.
On the work front I spent part of Monday doing some contractor work with a friend of mine. It was pretty enjoyable and a nice change to do some work that didn’t involve staring at a computer screen. I’m even thinking about helping out a lot more next year.
This weekend the Modest Money 6 Month Anniversary Giveaway wraps up too. So if you haven’t entered yet, get in while you can. Thank you to everyone who entered and thank you to all the fellow bloggers who provided prizes.

So what’s been your favorite event or moment from the Olympics so far? Or are some of you just waiting for it to be over so people stop talking about it?

I love Usain Bolt. Unfortunately, I`ve missed both the 100m and 200m live..
mycancukbuck recently posted..Blog round up for August 10, 2012
Yeah Bolt is pretty awesome. Not only is he an amazing sprinter, he’s a pretty likable guy with his charisma. I’m sure a whole lot of people were rooting for him.
Usain Bolt is amazingly arrogant and fun to watch. He’s so confident and I really do enjoy his crazy antics. He’s unbelievable fast and to see the Jamaican’s sweep the 200 was pretty cool.
Have a great weekend Jeremy.

He’s arrogant but in a friendly way. It’s much better than the arrogant ones who are always glaring and do minimal celebration. I loved his ‘royal family’ wave before his 200m finals.
I’ve been watching everything! That soccer game against the US had me on the edge of my seat. I do think its interesting that we’ve been winning a lot of bronze medals, and only have one gold. I wonder what it is that is holding us back from taking the top spot. Is it a lack of competitive edge? Thanks for the link love!
Earth and Money recently posted..Investing to Save the World
Maybe part of it is how satisfied Canadians are to win any medal. There isn’t that pressure where gold is the only medal that counts…unless it’s hockey. I suspect a large part of it is money too. In some other countries they pour a lot more money into getting their athletes the absolute best training possible. I assume the Canadian budget is much smaller.
I can’t get enough of the Olympics!!! Personally, I love all the events from swimming, to gymnastics, to diving, to synchronized swimming. I love seeing all of the “niche” sports that we rarely see here in the U.S. Furthermore, rarely do you see the sort of pure joy that is on display at the Olympics. Now, I can’t wait for the Winter Games in 2014!
Greg@ClubThrifty recently posted..I Need to Lose Weight
For sure, the niche sports are cool to watch. I have a tough time following something like synchronized swimming, but watching some water polo, handball, field hockey, etc was a nice change from the traditional popular team sports. My favorite is probably still the sprinting.
I’ve been watching some of it. Mainly the track & field, swimming and beach volleyball. I find the Summer Olympics so much more enjoyable than the Winter for some reason.
Sounds like you just prefer to see some skin
I think part of the reason why the summer olympics is more entertaining is because most of us have taken part in a lot of those kinds of events. So we can just relate more. Plus in the winter olympics there are just far fewer countries taking part, making it less of a big deal.
We’ve had the Olympics on at work and I’ve been following it on and off. And of course, Brian follows it, along with every other sport….. I’m kind of glad I missed watching that soccer game though, it sounded very frustrating.
CF recently posted..Getting a line of credit increase
Wow you get to watch it at work? That doesn’t sound like a very productive environment. I should know since I’ve had it on while I work.
The soccer game was very frustrating. They were doing so well, leading against the best team in the world. Then an extremely brutal call ruined it all. Apparently the call the ref made wasn’t made in like 10 years at high levels of soccer.
Surprisingly, my favorite has been Michael Phelps. Going in I thought I had Phelps overload but the more I interviews I saw, the more I wanted him to keep winning.
Usain Bolt was also pretty awesome. Watching him jog the second half of the 200m prelims and still keep the gap on the field is just crazy.
K @ Get Worth recently posted..Investing 101 Part 2
I was disappointed in Phelps. It seemed that he went in knowing he was going to be the all time medal leader despite what kind of effort he put in. He definitely could’ve got more medals if he had trained harder. It’s as if he wanted to have an excuse to not clean up again.
And with Bolt it is funny to see him jogging through the line while everyone else is giving their all.
Yeah, that was my thought at first too. But I guess after hearing him talk about it, I can respect the fact that he wanted to enjoy it a little more the last time around.
K @ Get Worth recently posted..Investing 101 Part 2
And by enjoy it I assume he means spend time with his hot girlfriend rather than train his ass off.
We’ve missed the entire Olympics, unfortunately. I love watching the short races especially, because they’re so intense. Guess I’ll have to wait another 4 years. It would really be fun to go visit in person, though. Anyone know where the Olympics are next time?
Jacob @ iHeartBudgets recently posted..Budget Friday Submission 2
The next summer olympics is down in Brazil shortly after they host the World Cup. It would be pretty awesome going down there to check it out. Tickets to events are just so expensive though. When the winter olympics were here in Vancouver I wanted to watch some events in person, but I couldn’t justify the price. It was still cool experiencing the atmosphere on the streets though.
It’s addictive when you start watching right? The UK are doing really well too; it helps having the home crowds. The diving final starts in about an hour – you should definitely tune in for that

Savvy Scot recently posted..Free Fuel for a Year!
I agree that the UK is doing pretty awesome. I was surprised that Andy Murray pulled out the win in tennis. They dominated the biking events too. In addition to the home crowds they get the advantage of getting to train in all of those facilities from the start. I’m sure the government dumps more money into doing well when they are hosting too.
Thanks for the love man. So why the cat?? Man’s best friend?

lol I guess you haven’t been following my weekly updates for long enough. I just don’t like publishing posts without photos. So I decided to use some of the old photos of my cats that have built up over the years. One of these days I’ll get myself a camera and take some photos of other stuff. For now though, you all have to put up with photos of my cats
We’ve been watching our fair share of Olympic events. I must say, though, that I’m ready for football (not to be confused with soccer) season to start back up. Exhibition games are starting now and the regular season starts next month. Go Packers!
Justin @ The Family Finances recently posted..Our College Savings Plan
I like the Packers too. My sport of choice is hockey though. 2 months to go until that gets going again.
My favorite part was probably the swimming events. It was fun to watch lochte and Phelps!
Lance@MoneyLife&More recently posted..The History of Daphne the Dog – Pets are EXPENSIVE!
I have a hard time getting into any of the swimming. Maybe it’s because I suck at swimming and failed the first swimming badge. Damn back float
lol
Missy Franklin was my favorite because she’s from Colorado and seems like a great role model for young kids. I also liked the fellow from South Africa who ran on prosthetic legs. I can’t remember his name, but that was a great story.
Kim@Eyesonthedollar recently posted..Hidden Costs of Kindergarten
Yeah Oscar Pistorius was a pretty inspiring story. It is somewhat controversial though. Now what would stop someone with some bionic arm dominating something like shot-put? I can’t say I know who Missy is though.
So how about I was watching this morning and decided synchronized swimming is my new favorite event. And I don’t care what the scores said…the Canadians rocked it! (Though the Spanish had a pretty cool routine, too IMHO.) There was too much traditional swimming coverage for me. I enjoyed the first twenty events; after that it got old.
femmefrugality recently posted..Sunshine Awards!
It is pretty crazy what those synchronized swimmers can do, but it’s a little too artsy to be a sport that I can get into. There is a ton of swimming events, but with coverage on multiple channels, it’s easy enough to switch if you don’t want to watch that event.
My favorite is the 100 and 200 meter runs. I just wish Bolt didn’t let up at the end. He could of had the world record!! Oh well. I’m enjoying women’s soccer and beach volleyball too.
Have a great weekend!
Those are usually my favorites too. Bolt might’ve been able to get another world record, but I guess he’d rather showboat a bit. That or he’s saving that second for the next Olympics.
Congrats Jeremy. I think your desire to go extra mile to help others is the reason why you are getting link love from so many blogs despite writing just one article. Way to go my friend. And thanks for the mention.
Shilpan recently posted..Keeping Up with The Joneses: A Fast Lane to Financial Fatality
You’ve got a point there. I do always go the extra mile when helping out my blogger friends. I seem to be the go-to guy for all kinds of questions as if I’m some seasoned blogger. Most of the time I do know the answers though. So I’m happy to help out.
Haha, I’m one of those people waiting for it to be over. I never watch the Olympics. I’m sure it’s great and all, just not my thing.

Jen @ Master the Art of Saving recently posted..Happy 2nd Blogiversary 2 Me & A Giveaway 4 You
I knew there was at least one person here who wasn’t enjoying the olympics. I used to be that way about a lot of the events, but now I’ve started to appreciate the talent and drama more.
As a reader of my blog, you already know my favorite part (and only part that I watched), my former roommate winning the Bronze for Women’s Long Jump… by a centimeter!
It must’ve been pretty cool watching someone you know competing at the peak of her sport on tv. It’s almost like seeing your favorite blogger on the news lol.
Thanks for the mention Jeremy! I’m a loser and haven’t followed the Olympics at all this year ….

Love the olympics but hate this time delay. I have to avoid all social media after 9 am haha

That is an unfortunate aspect of international sports. It’s not always at a time suitable for tv viewing but that doesn’t stop the results from showing up all over the internet.
Thanks for the shoutout! Sorry, would have stopped by earlier, I was away all weekend.
Hope you had a good weekend, and hopefully, this week you and others can comment on my blog!

Well, it seems you didn’t check Indian medal tally. We are the second most populous country and in the medal ranking…we sit at 55th position.

Jyotsna recently posted..Retiring with Rs.1 Crore, Is this Enough?
Yes population size alone won’t win medals. It takes a sporting commitment by both the government and the country’s society. If sports are placed as a high priority for young people, those potential athletes end up pursuing other careers.
