August 24th 2012 Blog Update

Again it was a really good week in Modest Money’s world. After some rough months earlier this year, things seem to be lining up for me lately.

I’d have to say the blogging community has played a major role in that transformation. You’re all so supportive and understanding. Plus you all provide a lot of inspiration to keep working towards my goals.

It’s tough to not stay super positive in that environment. So thank you very much to all the bloggers I’ve been connecting with. I just hope I’m giving enough back to everyone who has helped out.

Now with FinCon only 2 weeks away I’m starting to regret not making the commitment to go. I guess the main reason I decided to not go this year was because many of my contacts weren’t going either. I didn’t really consider how many actually are going though. Thinking ahead to FinCon 2013, I don’t know how I’ll have to time to meet everyone.

The other reason that I’m disappointed that I chose not to go to FinCon this year is because I was recently named as a finalist for 2 different Plutus Awards. Since I’m up against some pretty solid blogs, I don’t expect to win either award, but it would’ve been cool to hear my blog’s name mentioned with those awesome blogs.

I know a couple of you mentioned that you voted for me, but I have no idea who else did. Thanks to whoever that was. I really don’t think my blog is anything special, but I guess I’m doing something right. Honestly there were some much more deserving blogs that should’ve been named a finalist over my blog.

I’m loving all the weekly mentions on other blogs too. I try to acknowledge all the blogs that link to my blog, but I’m sure I miss some along the way. Shoot me an e-mail if I missed a mention and I’ll include it next week. Thanks everyone!

I guess I just have to accept that my favorites post has to be published on Saturdays from now on. It’s a small price to pay to get this much exposure each week.

So who’s going to FinCon this year? Is anyone else regretting not making plans to go?

    • One blogger friend is doing that and has been encouraging me to do the same. I just can’t justify spending the money to only take part in half the stuff. Planning it at this stage would be a lot more expensive too.

  1. I am regretting not going but I wasn’t making much money blogging up until the last few months and I just couldn’t justify it at the time I needed to make the decision. I have a few work seminars scheduled for the week of the conference or else I’d probably make it happen.

Hopefully things will work out so I can make it in 2013.

That’s really awesome you got nominated for the Plutus awards! I have seen all of the promotion about them but I haven’t really looked into it much. It just seems like it would be bloggers voting for other bloggers. I’d be happy to throw out a vote for you. Is the voting pretty easy or do they ask for a bunch of different things?

    • I think the voting is over now and the final decision is up to the judges, but I’m not sure. I didn’t vote myself, but it did seem a little too complicated. I think you have you vote for a lot of different categories with just blank text boxes. It probably would’ve been better if they had a nomination phase and then a voting phase, but yeah it was just bloggers voting for each other. They’d know a wider variety of blogs though.

As for FinCon, I was the same way, when I was making the decision the money wasn’t coming in yet. Then as the deadline drew near I had just made other plans for my extra cash.

  2. Oh whew! I was beginning to think I was the only person not going to FinCon as well. The timing with me and my blog/unemployment/employment didn’t line up. I was talking wtih Andrea last night and briefly considered going but I can’t find people to cover me at work.

Thanks for the mention. Guess we will be keeping up the blogosphere while everyone is gone!

    • I’m sure they’ll still find time to have some posts scheduled and send out tweets. They’ll probably give us enough updates to wish we were there too. Ironically I think I currently have the ideal job setup to be able to attend something like that. If only my frugal side wasn’t so strong these days.

  3. Well, you already know I’m going and Jeff’s playing SAHD for a few days. I agree with Joe; ROAD TRIP!!!! You should definitely come! What if you win a plutus award? If you do….I’m taking it. I’ll just say “Jeremy didn’t want it as bad as me…obviously. He didn’t even come!” NOW do you want to go? lol!!! ;)

    • lol Michelle. Yes you are welcome to claim any award on my behalf. I’m up against blogs that have been around for a lot longer and don’t go so heavy on the guest posts. So I don’t think I have to worry about winning. If I do, I could be one of those people at award shows that are just too cool to be there to accept.

    • That might be true, but by next year I’d be able to afford it even if it’s down in Florida. They seem to do a good job of trying to pick a central location though.

    • Thanks Nick. I don’t know how much I deserve 2 finalist features, but I don’t mind at all. I think you would’ve taken my spot in the new blogger category if you hadn’t taken a hiatus.

    • Yeah I do think it would help to have a decent understanding of things before going to a conference like that. That way you can absorb a lot of more of the advanced stuff. I don’t think they’ve chosen a 2013 location yet.

    • Yeah you totally should have gone since your blog has been around a little longer. You seem to have a ton of blogging friends. See you there in 2013 though :)

    • lol yeah I don’t think it’s too popular outside of the blogging community. So I’m sure most of us hadn’t heard of it when we first started out blogging.

  4. What’s a Plutus?! Lol, just checked it out today. Congrats on the nominations, definitely well-deserved. I’m with Jason, I’d like to fund FinCon ’13 with blog income, but us youngin’s are definitely going to take over next year! Like i’ve told others, you’ll be able to easly spot me. I’m the guy who’s a party lookin’ for a place to happen ;)

And wow, you are EVERYWHERE nowadays. Nice work!

    • I was wondering the same thing lol. Sounds greek to me.

Looking at my paypal balance, I totally should’ve used some of that money to go, but I know I’ll find somewhere good to spend any blog income.

Next year we’ll have to have a private party with just the youngins. Should be an awesome time.

And yes I get around a bit haha.

    • Jeremy, the “sounds greek to me is actually pretty accurate, although the word is the Latinized verson.

Plutus (or Ploutos in Greek) was the Greek god of wealth. According to myth, he was blinded by Zeus so he could hand out wealth indiscriminately and without regard to merit.

    • Yeah the money is the big reason why I’m not going to FinCon. I’m just too close to some financial goals to accept the setback, despite how beneficial it probably would be. I think if you really put the effort into a conference like that you can easily get the cost back in the future growth of your blog. To do that though you need sufficient time to plan your strategy. Maybe by next year I can even convince some sponsor to pay for part of my trip in exchange for me wearing their tshirt.

  5. I will not be going to FinCon12 either because it is during month-end close. I’m disappointed because over the past two months I have met tons of people online that I would love to meet in person, but life has been way too crazy and I have too much going on to justify the trip.

I definitely will be at FinCon13. I’m actually already looking forward to it even tho FinCon12 isn’t even over yet.

  6. It’s still up in the air whether I can get to Denver for any after-hours activities. But this was probably the one year out of all eternity that I was ever going be be able to go, since it is only 60 miles away.

    • Thanks for dropping by to comment Rebecca. And that’s ‘awards’ with an ‘s’ :) I got nominated for an extra one for being Canadian lol. The benefits of having a fellow Canadian as one of the awards organizers.

    • That’s actually a really good idea CF. I’m totally down for traveling as a group. We can drive a van down to Bellingham, fly together and even split hotel rooms. That is if we’re not too sick of each other from our meetups in the meantime lol.

    • I never really looked into it either. I don’t think blogs were nominated. I think the voting was all blank text fields to enter whoever you wanted. That extra work probably limited the number of voters. Since this is only the 3rd year for Plutus awards, maybe that will change next year.

    • hahah….still wondering about contacts. Well in all honesty I can be a bit shy with people I don’t know. So it makes sense that I’d especially want to meet the people who I have been talking to the most. I do want to meet all my blogger friends, but when my closest blogger friends mostly aren’t going, it gets a bit tougher to justify the cost.

    • It would be nice to have blog income paying for the entire trip. So I can see why lots of people based their decision on that. By waiting until your blog has been around for more than a year you’d really know if you’re in it for the long haul too.

    • Thanks Elizabeth. I’m just naturally kinda hard on myself, which is why the name Modest Money was a good fit. In all honesty though, I’d have a better chance if there was a category for best marketing by a new blog.

    • I wouldn’t say I have any secret. I think it’s fairly obvious how I get so many mentions. Hint…lots of networking, carnival submissions and linking out lots in my own link round ups.

It would be pretty sweet if FinCon 2013 was in Seattle, but I doubt it would happen. It seems they’re focusing on central locations to limit the average cost per person.
