Beginning of August 2012 Blog Update

Vancouver Sunset

It was a pretty exciting week around here at ModestMoney.com.

First I’ll start with the blogging stuff…

My blog had 2 big milestones. Last Friday was my 100th post. I was so caught up preparing for my 6 month blogging anniversary that I didn’t remember until the middle of this week. For the anniversary I decided to have a big contest in which several bloggers contributed cash prizes or ebooks. Here’s another thanks to those generous bloggers:

If you haven’t entered the contest, you’ve still got 10 days. Considering there are 14 separate prizes, I think the odds are pretty good. With some of the entry options you can even enter daily.

Beyond those milestones, the other exciting event was being featured on the Global BC TV news. I admit I was dreaming of more traffic from it, but it was still a very cool experience. It was even the 2nd story of the news hour. Friends back in hometown Kitimat even saw it. More of them would’ve watched it, but I didn’t want to share it beforehand in case it was too awkward.

I also took the next step in monetizing my blog by adding an affiliate page promoting credit card offers. If any of you could help promote that page, it would be much appreciated. By now I’m sure you realize that I like to return favors. So here’s your chance to get in my good books :P

In non-blogging news, I’ve started to date a bit more recently. I haven’t met that perfect girl for me yet, but maybe my Saturday date will be the one. If not, there’s more lining up lol. I am a big tv star now after all hahah. Any Vancouver bloggers got any single, good looking female friends? That would really get you in my good books. I share this news since some of the married bloggers apparently live vicariously through this stuff. Sorry no nitty gritty details unless you contact me in private lol.

Modest Money Around The Web

I don’t know what the deal is, but there were a whole lot of mentions around the web this week. I guess more people are just figuring out how awesome this blog is. Or maybe they are figuring out how awesome I am. Oops, supposed to be modest…gotta get back in character ;) The tv appearance must be going to my head.

Since there were so many mentions this week I will publish my favorite posts of the week tomorrow. I don’t want to put over 50 links on a single page if I can avoid it. That would just be taking away some of the benefits to the blogs I’m trying to acknowledge.

Thank you for to everyone who linked in this week. Feel free to keep the love coming. Please?

In other news, Google PageRank updated this week. I was happy to stay at PR4. I know the jump to PR5 is a big one and I don’t think any of my websites have reached that point. I will try to make a good push for it in the next few months. At least I didn’t slip down to PR3.

So how did you all do in the big PR update? I know at least a couple of you joined the PR4 club. How about the rest of you? Does anyone have any exciting plans for the rest of the summer?

    • Congrats on coming up to 6 months Shilpan. That is a good idea to give a shout out to everyone who has inspired you along the way. I probably should’ve done something like that, but I do make plenty of effort to link to most of my blogging friends. If search engines didn’t limit the benefits when there are lots of links, I’d be linking to even more blogs.

  1. Congratulations on the TV spot! That’s amazing! I noticed that they didn’t actually ever mention the name of your blog, that might be why you didn’t see a huge traffic boost. Looks like the PR update hit me – I’m down to 2 from 3, but I kind of expected that given that I took a one month vacation from blogging this summer. I’m sure I will get it back up in the next update. But I also got on the Money Index, so that makes me happy :D

    • Yeah they only mention it briefly in the subtitles at the start of the interview. Oh well, I’m still happy about it. Maybe I’ll even mention it in any future job interviews to reflect how far my blog has come.

That’s too bad about your PR drop, but yeah I guess it was expected. You do really have to keep busy to maintain and increase PR. It is good motivation to work hard this next few months,

    • Hmm, haven’t tried that one. There’s a free site that lots of people use here and it was even started by someone who lived in the same college dorm as me. Maybe I’ll give eharmony a try if the upcoming dates don’t work out.

    • PR3 is pretty good for not even knowing it existed. Some bloggers obsess over PR and work very hard to get to that level. I was lucky enough to have website marketing experience and a lot of free time to be able to get to PR4 early on. Relaxing and enjoying the weather sounds like pretty good summer plans to me. I need to find a way to fit in more of that.

  2. Lots of milestones, Jeremy! That’s awesome :) Congrats on being on TV – that’s pretty cool. I’ve had some media requests which have caused me to want to become un-anonymous, but I have a benchmark that i want to hit before doing that so not yet :)

Good luck/have fun on your date tomorrow!! I hope it goes well.

    • I think the media requests should be enough reason to go un-anonymous. They will just help get to that benchmark you’re aiming for. I do wonder what level you’re aiming for before you ‘come out of the closet’. Your blog is already doing so well with such a huge following. I consider it very successful already. So I wouldn’t let any specific stats hold you back.

    • Yep I’m glad I stayed at PR4. I knew for sure I wouldn’t go up to PR5, but dropping to PR3 seemed a real possibility. PR doesn’t really mean much to anyone but advertisers though. So with the amount of followers you have, I’m sure the PR doesn’t matter much to you. Shoot me an e-mail if you do want some tips for boosting that stat.

  3. First off, congrats on the milestones. I’ve appeared on TV, too several times. TV appearance will not increase traffic. But what it will do for you is enhance your credability. Keep up the great work.

I did see The Dark Knight when it first premiered. I understand where you are coming from :-) Long movie, but I liked it. Tom Brady did an excellent job. Especially since I recently saw him in the movie “This Means War.”

    • Good point about credibility. I’ll have to add a ‘as seen on’ thing to my sidebar soon. It did give a small boost of traffic. I guess we both have a problem of having a name that is tough to remember the spelling of when hearing it on tv.

I was wondering if anyone would notice my comment about the Batman movie in the middle of the list lol.

    • Congrats on that quick PR jump Lance. I think getting to PR4 in your first update is quite impressive. I managed that too, but only with lots of prior marketing experience.

    • Yup who knows. I’m in no big rush though. If it works out, awesome, but if not no big deal. This time around I want to take the time to find the right woman instead of miss right now :)

  4. I can’t believe you don’t trip on all the girls that are surely lining up outside your door since you are, like you said, a big tv star now! ;) Good luck with your date tomorrow night! Obviously, you can’t blog about it if it goes well….but if it doesn’t, why not share, right? What is she going to do? Not see you anymore?

Great job on all your milestones and successes. I’m proud to be in your “good books” as you say! I think you’re a good bloggy friend!

    • They’ll start lining up soon enough lol. The date on Saturday has some potential. She’s a lot younger than me, but we had a good chat for a couple hours last night. I could tell you about the last one I was dating since we kinda broke things off. There’s not much for juicy details though.

You and Jeff have been good blogging friends too. I’m sure you’ll always be in my good books.

    • Something like that might actually work. Or when the list gets too big I can just turn into a jerk that doesn’t acknowledge any links. That seems to be the trend in blogging lol.

    • I’ve been involved in the credit card affiliate niche for a long time. So I have a pretty good idea of which credit cards are good choices. Also my affiliate rep is always very helpful. Shoot me an e-mail if you need any help.

    • Some bloggers’ PR progression is a little slower based on things like how much time they can put in. Just keep working hard and you’ll see the results. There are some other things you can do to grow quicker such as expanding your weekly link round up. Being more active on social media would help too.

    • No problem Kim. Congrats on starting your blog. There is a whole lot to learn, but bloggers are generally very helpful and are willing to answer any questions or lend a hand.

    • Yep, all kinds of stuff achieved lately. I’m pretty proud but I know it will still take a lot of work to keep the momentum going and achieving similar results. Thanks for your help Mark.

    • Yep it must be the tv appearance lol. Who wouldn’t want to suck up to a tv star blogger? ;)
PR2 is not bad for a new blogger. You’ll have to work pretty hard to get to PR4. People say not to worry about PR, but personally I think it’s a great sign that you’re doing what Google wants to see.

    • Yeah I didn’t realize at first until someone told me they jumped up to PR4. Don’t worry too much about not improving from PR2. Considering how you were recently busy with house hunting, it is understandable that you didn’t have the time to really make the marketing push to get to the next level.

    • Thanks Lauren. All the exposure is quite satisfying. Hopefully things continue to grow, but I know a lot will come down to what kind of effort I can continue to put forth.

    • Thanks SS. My blog stats did grow quite quickly but it took a ton of time and effort. It wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination. Your blog is progressing quite well too.
