Well it’s been an interesting week at work. It was an SEO professional’s worst nightmare….Google rankings wiped out.
I’ve been through this numerous times and it rarely turns out well. In this case I was particularly worried since this website wasn’t on the best terms with Google anyway. First thoughts are of course ‘Oh shit! What did I do wrong??’ Soon after it’s the nervous feeling about having to say something to your boss about it.
It turned out that being open with them right away was definitely the right move. Together we were able to analyze the situation and dig into the possible causes. The problem ended up being how we switched the entire website over to a secure server which changes all urls to start with https. When that happens it takes some time for Google to switch everything over and give credit for backlinks.
So it was a pretty big relief that it wasn’t caused by anything that I did and that the rankings would come back. Now it’s just a matter of cleaning everything up and building some links to speed up the process. With any luck rankings will come back within a couple weeks.
There have also been some major developments in my personal life, but I’ll wait for things to settle down before spilling the beans. As for my friend that I mentioned last week, he’s still working things out with his girlfriend. I don’t think things are looking good there.
Modest Money Around The Web
Thank you to everyone who has linked to Modest Money lately. I know it’s mostly due to my networking and bloggers doing marketing, but I like to pretend it’s due to the quality of this blog. Then again I haven’t been writing much. So if the quality isn’t up to par don’t blame me lol. No the guest writers have been great and I appreciate them sending in awesome posts and responding to comments. I am always open to accepting quality guest posts from fellow bloggers.

Glad to hear the Google situation worked out better than expected, I am sure that be a bit frantic. I am not a huge fan of soccer, although I did play it for a number of years as a kid. Have a great weekend!

Yeah all often Google problems lead to months and months of just hoping things return to normal. It’s not very often that it’s something that will pretty much resolve itself within weeks. I played soccer for a long time as a kid and that’s a big reason why I still appreciate it now.
You can’t just tell us you have major life changes and then leave us hanging. Come on Jeremy. haha Just kidding. Have a good weekend.

I don’t leave readers hanging too often but I will this time
I think I made it fairly easy to guess what it is though.
I have a guess – but you know what assuming does…
What’s the deal with the google change? We didn’t notice any change with our page rank – though our Alexa stagnated a bit this week.
Mrs. Pop @ Planting Our Pennies recently posted..PoP Balance Sheet – October 2012
Well Alexa ranking changes almost every day. With Google PageRank it seems they are back on a once every 3 months schedule. In the past Google wasn’t always consistent with that schedule. So all you can do is be patient there and work at getting lots of links.
Go Sporting!!!!!!!! We’re winning the MLS cup so you can just give up now if you’d like.
Glad to hear that the work situation wasn’t your fault; what’s this big news you’re speaking of?? Buying a house…getting engaged? New cat? Hmmmm….

Well I’ll give up but only because my team lost last night. I’m just pissed off that it was a result of a dive in the box to create a penalty shot. You’ll find out about the big news soon enough Jason.
Hat must have been a horrible feeling. Glad you didn’t cause it though. If you did it might have been a short job for you.

I was pretty worried about that. I don’t know if it would’ve cost me my job, but it sure would’ve put a lot of extra pressure. Just the fact that it can be recovered before long makes it a much better situation.
Thanks for the mention dude!

No problem John. Enjoy your weekend.
I am a Beckham fan (who isn’t?
) but it would have been nice for the Whitecaps to win.
Thanks for the mention! Have a good weekend.

I for one am not a fan lol. I was making fun of his hair and pink shoes all game. Someone forgot to tell him that breast cancer awareness month is over. He’s one of the more overrated players out there.
Ha, ya right don’t leave us hanging mate.. we wanna know all the juicy behind the scenes business of your life, so spill it!
Glad that worked out, goodness I could only imagine what would have happened. You’ve had some great guest posters here mate and I read every post. I might not comment on them all but I read them. Chat soon. Mr.CBB

Thanks for the support Mr CBB. I’ll probably spill the juicy details soon enough. I just want to wait until it’s all cleared up. I agree that the guest posters have been great. It’s really appreciated that when I can’t post there are plenty of awesome writers willing to help out.
SEO works seems so much harder than I had originally thought. I didn’t realize that you switch to a https when you move over to a secure server.
Marissa @ Thirtysixmonths recently posted..You Are What You Do, Not WhatYou Want To Do.
Some parts of SEO are dead simple, but other stuff gets pretty complicated. It’s especially tough when you’re in a competitive market. Then there’s Google constantly changing their algorithm and the rules of the game.
Thanks for the link-back Jeremy… enjoy the weekend. Also, love the picture – reminds me of the lakes up in Northern Michigan… just beautiful.

Thanks Jason. That was the first HD shot I took with my new smartphone. I was just messing around testing the camera but it turned out to be a really good shot. It’s a lake 10 mins from my place where I kayak in the summer and do walks around.
Thought for the day I guess is don’t anger the Google Gods! Glad you’re doing well. Have a great weekend. I only watch my daughter’s soccer games and I still have no idea what’s going on.

Those are some vengeful gods. So yeah don’t piss them off. They’re not likely to respond to your prayers.
With the exception of football, I never really got into watching sports. I’d much rather play, and, too be honest, there aren’t a lot of sports I enjoy playing either (basketball with friends is fun).
I used to be more just into playing sports, but then I got both busy and lazy. So it’s just too hard to fit in some time to play sports these days. It’s pretty easy to have a game on tv while doing some work though.
Did I get the advance scoop on the personal news? One day, you’re going to have to explain to me what exactly an SEO professional does!
Brian recently posted..3 Ideas for a cheap and frugal Halloween
Yep I did share it with you on Thursday night. I can show you what an SEO professional does but it’s far from being glamorous.
I still don’t understand SEO very well, and probably not optimizing it on my site. I need to continue reading more, on your site and others about that.
Oh well, continuous learning
Thanks for the mentions!

Yes SEO jobs can be a bit stressful at times. Even when you’re not doing anything wrong you can lose search engine rankings overnight and be scrambling to try to recover.
You’re talking about your day job’s site, right? That must have been scary thinking that you might get the blame for it! Glad you got it all straightened out! Now you can relax and enjoy your weekend.
Michelle recently posted..Paying for Multiple Students with College Loans
Yeah that was my employer’s website. In that kind of situation the blame would go to the SEO guy the majority of times. It just happened to be something the webmaster did though. The other annoying part is that it is a big change that I was consulted about at all.
Jeremy, thanks for the inclusion! Happy Movember!
