Beginning of October 2012 Blog Update

So I’ve now been working my new job for over a week. I have to say it’s going quite well. The main website I’m working on for them deals with selling structured settlement payments. I’m still learning about that industry, but it is fairly interesting.

The company is super supportive giving me everything I need, including cookies, doughnuts and pizza. Plus they have a sweet office with an awesome view of the ocean and mountains. I could definitely get used to it.

I do have to admit that I’m happy to move on from my last job. While my last boss is a nice guy, he was just far too busy. That lead to a job with too much independence and zero feedback. Then as I was getting started on their new website I had to deal with the frustration of trying to meet the demands of a non-technical coworker. Apparently as a website marketer I was also expected to be a website design professional and programmer. It definitely gave me some sympathy to all the website designers who deal with clients like that all the time.

On the blogging front it was nice to not see a drop in traffic as I step back from blog commenting. With that kind of trend it will be tough to get back into commenting eventually. Perhaps I will just take a different approach when I get back into it. I guess I don’t need to be so concerned with trying to comment on all of my blogger friends’ posts every single day. Being more selective would probably be best for everyone. Anyways, it’s something to think about for when I ever have more time to dedicate to blogging again.

Modest Money Around The Web

In addition to traffic not dropping, there were nearly as many mentions on other blogs as previous weeks. This is an area I knew would drop a bit since I just didn’t have time to reach out to bloggers to get extra links. Still I can’t complain about how many people did mention Modest Money. Thank you everyone.

This weekend it is Thanksgiving here in Canada. I believe it is also a long weekend down in the US, but I’m not positive what the holiday is. Regardless, I hope everyone has an awesome weekend. Does anyone have any big plans?

    • Well I don’t have my own office, but my desk is in the main area and there and plenty of windows. I should’ve used the view as the image for this post.

  1. Yep, long weekend down here in the states, too. Columbus Day. Where we celebrate Columbus being the first person ever to discover America. Well. Sort of. I mean we all know that’s not true. But that’s not really the point. Just crack a beer, watch some football, and be happy. :-)

I know I already said this, but when I get very busy, I definitely comment less on others blogs. This bummed me out at first because I like to support people, but I realized that of course, keeping myself sane and having a good relationship with my wife and girls is more important. And commenting on others blogs once a week instead of once a day ain’t so bad. That’s what I think anyway.

Nice job getting a sweet view, man.

    • lol about Columbus. It is amusing that he gets the credit for discovering America even all these years later.

You’re making me feel guilty for not commenting at least once a week. I probably should try to do that once I’m more caught up on stuff. The thing is, comments actually help people a lot less than they assume. It’s actually the weakest way you can help fellow bloggers.

    • I’m more stoked about the doughnuts and cookies. I’m a true sugar fiend. I’ve been totally resisting the urge to hit up the gelato store downstairs.

    • Indeed. I’m thinking it could last pretty long. The company has a ton of potential and I’m pretty confident that I could do a lot to help them out. Plus they do plenty to keep me happy.

  2. Dude, that job sounds pretty flippin sweet. Honestly, I wish I had the SEO and computer skills you had because that stuff interests me so much, though I haven’t done much research on it, admittedly. And hey, comments start relationships in the blogging world, but you’ve already reached out to so many of us, we won’t ever doubt your loyalty or friendship because you get busy. Keep on rockin’! :)

    • Thanks for understanding Jacob. You’re still welcome to e-mail anytime. The SEO skills do come in pretty handy, but it does make for an unstable career. I’m hoping I finally found the company that I can stick around long term. I’ve spent too long jumping from job to job.

    • Thanks Veronica. Yup I’m the SEO manager, although it really includes more than just SEO. That is just one of their websites though. I’m sure before long I’ll be contacting you fellow bloggers for some marketing arrangements.

    • I totally agree. During that first week you really have to try to impress them and get on their good side. Now that it’s been 7 working days I am starting to get a bit more comfortable with how the office operates.

  3. I wouldn’t be too worried about commenting on all of the other blogs every day. I often read yours, but if there’s a bajillion comments (as there usually is) I’ll often skip commenting. Besides, you’ve got so much momentum going you can probably afford to lay off the commenting without any real negative effects. Congrats on the new job going well! I’ve found I don’t do well with an absent boss either, it sucks away my productivity.

    • Good to hear you’re still reading even when there are lots of comments. I don’t blame you for not commenting when there are a lot already. I know I tend to avoid commenting in that situation too.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t like an absent boss. You’d think the extra freedom would be awesome, but I’m the kind of employee who needs some kind of positive reinforcement or at least an update to know how well my work is helping with their business.

    • Have a good Thanksgiving too Mr CBB. I guess that’s something you wouldn’t be used to celebrating back in the UK. It was best to leave the last job. It probably wasn’t going to last for too much longer anyway and this new job has so much more potential.

    • Thanks Justin. I know people will understand, but I still feel that going from crazy commenting to almost no commenting is rather extreme change. The problem is that I am finding it tough to just fit in time for the work I do without doing any commenting. So I don’t know when I’ll be able to get back into it.

    • Exactly. I can manage my own time and don’t need someone looking over my shoulder, but the acknowledgement and bit of direction is huge. I guess I’m the pessimist type that gets worried if I don’t hear from the boss. The new office is pretty sweet and not just the view.

    • Thanks Shilpan. I appreciate the support. I have a feeling that I will do quite well there too. It feels like the right kind of environment for me to excel.

  4. “That lead to a job with too much independence and zero feedback” – I can completely 100% relate to this. MY current boss is a really great guy but he would have no idea what I actually do, let alone if I turn up for work.
Provided my projects are delivered on time (which they always are) then i may as well be a ghost.

I’m glad you are enjoying your new job, sometimes a change is all you need.

    • I assume that kind of situation happens with a lot of employees. Most bosses don’t really fully understand what a lot of employees do. Even if they don’t understand though, they can make an effort to at least show some kind of gratitude or be more proactive when dealing with them.

    • Thanks Terry. After too many jobs that just weren’t right, it is a big relief to find a job that should keep me happy. Now I have to do what I can to stick around long term.

    • No problem Mark. Thanks for the continued support. This blog may get a lot of mentions but I still appreciate each one of them. If not I wouldn’t bother linking back and trying to help everyone out.
