Beginning of September 2012 Blog Update

After an extended long weekend, it was a nice short week around here. At the end of my birthday weekend I decided to go on a short camping trip on Vancouver Island. It had been way too long since my last camping trip and too long since I had been over to the Island. Swimming in the ocean over there was way colder than the drunken night swimming on Friday.

On my actual birthday I convinced my new girlfriend to go kayaking and then she treated me to a nice dinner. Since it was a birthday weekend for 3 other friends, it was a weekend full of partying. All in all it was a pretty awesome break from blogging.

Once I got back from camping I had to do some serious catching up. It kinda makes me glad that I didn’t schedule a post for Tuesday since that would mean even more comments to reply to. Hopefully I didn’t miss too many good posts on other blogs while I was away.

Ironically I got a shitload of mentions on other blogs during this short holiday week. I guess I should take off every weekend and come back in the middle of the week. Thanks to everyone that mentioned my blog recently.

Ok if this list gets any bigger I’ll have to start listing carnival mentions earlier in the week. Also I might do the same for some of my favorite posts each week. That would require some extra organization though. So we’ll see.

How was everyone’s Labor Day weekend? Who all is out enjoy Denver at FinCon this weekend?

    • Yeah I’m not sure how worthwhile it would be for a non-financial blogger. I’d think you’d still learn a lot, but maybe not enough to justify the expense and time off work. There’s actually lots of people within my circles who didn’t go this year, mostly because I network with a lot of newer bloggers.

    • Long weekend trips are always fun. Glad to hear that was the case with your Halifax trip too. I’m sure both of us avoided some blogger burnout with our weekend trips.

    • Yep, from London it would be a tad expensive. I wonder how many bloggers make the trip from overseas. I’d think it would only be the really serious bloggers who are trying to make a living from their blog.

    • I’m sure you’ll make it next year even if you’re shy. A lot of bloggers are introverts. I’m the same way when meeting new people. By next FinCon you’ll know so many great bloggers that you won’t be able to resist going.

    • A lot of the advice in that post was really just a reminder to myself. I tend to run into blogger burnout once in a while. So it was something I needed to address. It does seem to come on a lot less these days though.

  1. Vancouver Island is such a fantastic place. Just two weeks ago I did the West Coast Trail and it was absolutely amazing. 75km of backpacking along amazing beaches and woodland trails, lots of wonderful people, and great weather (we were very lucky in this regard).

If you can find 5-8 days to just completely get away from everything at some point (since there’s no cellular reception anywhere) then I would highly recommend it.

    • I’d love to do the West Coast Trail sometime. The problem is finding the full week to get away from everything. Maybe I’ll try to do that when my blog is more self sustained with staff writers. I do really love spending time on the Island though. Are you from BC too?

      • Yeah, it’s not exactly easy for a lot of people to find the time to go do something like the Trail, especially when you have zero connection to anything in the outside world while there. The West Coast Trail isn’t going anywhere though so I’m sure you’ll find your chance down the road.

I live in BC but I’m not from there originally, so I haven’t actually been to Vancouver Island many times. Maybe 10 times total, mostly for fishing trips. I do love it every time I’m there though. If it wasn’t for the various transportation issues I would love living there. Maybe when I retire and if I’m tired of travelling…

        • That’s probably more times than I’ve been to Vancouver Island, but I grew up in Northern BC. I’d consider moving over there once I’m ready to settle down and have kids. The transportation issue would be rather inconvenient though. I’d hate to take the ferry every time I want to travel.

Give me a shout via e-mail. We’ve had a few meetups with local Vancouver area bloggers. You’d be welcome to come out next time.

    • Yeah I’m kinda jealous of the impersonal bloggers who barely respond to any comments. They must be saving a ton of time. I’d feel like a jerk taking that approach though. That’s too bad that you didn’t get to go down to Denver with it being so close.

    • That sounds like fun too. I was just trying to squeeze in some outdoor stuff before Vancouver’s other season rolls around….a.k.a. the time of year when it rains a lot.

    • Really? Even the 5th is too early in the month with your work? You’ll have to get in touch with the organizers and push them to host it later in the month next year.

    • Kim!!! I thought we had this discussion about blogger burnout?! Your poor husband. I hope he doesn’t mind losing some of your attention during your anniversary weekend.

    • I’d totally agree with you on the 3 day weekend thing, but I’ve been working from home for a while where 3 day weekends don’t mean much to me. I’ve heard that some countries do 4 day work weeks and just put in longer hours each day. I’d be in favor of something like that.

    • Hopefully you can make it out camping next summer. It’s a blast and a nice break away from technology. It’s one trip where you won’t be tempted to bring a laptop.

    • I really love kayaking too. When I have a more practical vehicle I’d consider buying my own. For now I just rent them. It’s really enjoyable to get out on the water in the midst of nature.
