Beginning of Summer Blog Update Comments47 Comments

beginning-of-summer

Well now that summer is finally upon us, the Vancouver weather decided to start cooperating. Good thing too because I’m going on a road trip to visit family tomorrow. Ok nevermind, it looks like it’s supposed to rain again tomorrow. I guess I already jinxed myself. I thought I could avoid that by checking the weather before finishing this paragraph. No such luck.

So since I will be away for the weekend, now is your chance to go against my commenting etiquette post and leave a nice short comment. Maybe try to prove that a short comment can still be meaningful. And no, ‘thanks for the mention’ isn’t meaningful. It better at least include my name if that’s all you got :P

Hmmm, now blog news. Well my blog just got under 50K with its Alexa Ranking. Since that was my long term Alexa goal, I guess my work is done here. My blog has been gradually transitioning into part finance blog part diary though. So I’m not going anywhere anytime soon. Plus I want a reason for you all to keep chatting with me lol.

The thing that gave me the final surge under 50K was my top Canadian investing blogs post, which was a follow up to my post for the top Canadian personal finance blogs. Just a reminder that both of those polls will be unofficially wrapping up at the end of the month. Then I’ll be featuring the top blogs in a Canada Day post. So if you haven’t voted, head on over there now.

As for the most active commenters widget, it continues to add something extra to the comments section and gives back to you all. Since the spammers haven’t clued in, it looks like it’s gonna stay for now.

Modest Money Around The Web

Again there were a lot of mentions due to the investing blogs post. Plus I found a bunch of mentions on one blog that I felt pretty bad about never acknowledging. Sorry Tom!

Thanks very much to everyone who mentioned Modest Money or posts from this blog.

Your blog is doing well!My Alexa score seems to be stuck even though my reader numbers have gone up high. I need more Alexa toolbar users to read my blog!

And thanks for including my post.

Don’t worry about your alexa if you’re getting lots of subscribers. Alexa doesn’t really mean much. I mostly only care about it since it makes this blog look better on my website marketing resume.

Just into the interior of BC, nowhere super exciting. My mom & stepdad just built a new house out there and my grandma is visiting them for the month.

lol I checked the weather forecast for where I’ll be tonight. It’s calling for a thundershower. At least they have a nice view at their new house. So it’ll still be enjoyable to sit inside watching lightning and visiting with the family.

Good plan. That’s what weekends are supposed to be for. I’ve just turned into such a workaholic that I don’t take the time to do that much. At least I’ll get in some of that, which will be much needed after an 8 hour drive.

My alexa is dropping finally, yay!! I remember how scary it was seeing it at 7 million when I got my new domain. It’s dropping nicely and now I’m around 300k. Not bad for about 3 weeks. Just gotta keep up the momentum now.

Hope you have a good roadtrip! Remember, cruise control as much as possible lol. Also thanks for the mention and share !

Yup you’ll be under 200k in no time. I’m sure people really enjoy your blog with the heart and honesty you put into it. And yeah I’ll try to remember cruise control cause my ankles just super sore on long drives.

Yeah Erika probably has a decent following with the quality of her blog and all the work she puts into it. Her rankings drop is well deserved.

Thanks for the mention, Jeremy! Is that a good enough comment? ;)

For some reason I never realized you lived in Vancouver! I’m so jealous man!!! I REALLY want to take a trip up there sometime. Do you take advantage of skiing at all? How it is to live up there? How is the cost of living?

Yup sometimes these comment forms are too smart for their own good.

I love Vancouver, but it’s not affordable at all. So I’m probably gonna have to have move sometime in the next few years so I can buy a home.

I used to ski regularly, but I’ve got kinda lazy and cheap about it. I should get back into it though. I assume you ski too since you ask about it.

Where would you consider moving to? Could you give me an idea of the rental costs? I’ve always been fairly fascinated about moving there. I wouldn’t want to give up my US citizenship but I wouldn’t mind having a vaca home up there one day.

You’d be better off having a vacation home on the US side of the border in Washington. Vancouver is less than an hour away from the border.

For rent it is tough to find any 1 bedroom apartments under $800/month unless you are willing to deal with a long commute to work. That even includes run down low-rises and basement suites.

I’m not really sure where I’d move. Maybe the interior of BC or maybe even down into Washington. I dunno about giving up Canadian citizenship though. We’ll see what happens in the next few years.

Not sleeping much these days lol. I’ve just been lucky that my job has been flexible since I work from home on my own hours. So it’s much easier to fit everything in. Plus I have found some ways to cut back a bit without it being as noticeable.

    Thanks for the mention……………………..

I appreciate you keeping the conversation lively on my blog :) . Congrats on the Alexa drop. I’ve just gotten below 500,000, so I’m pretty happy about that as well. It doesn’t seem like you are going to slow down here anytime soon, so that’s a good thing. I think it’s awesome that you can use this blog on your resume. I’m thinking about engaging a friend at my work who got hired to analyze web traffic because he started and ran a successful blog, too. I wonder if he can get me hired if I do the same…..hmmmmm…..

Congrats on getting below 500K. With the quality of your writing, I’m sure you will keep dropping, especially if you stay consistent with the marketing efforts. I know my alexa ranking simply won’t keep dropping at this point though. It gets progressively tougher and tougher to drop the lower you get. If I can stay below 50K I’ll be pretty happy.

i like the changes in the blog. its nice to get to know the people behind the writing, so i hope you’ll continue to share more. i’ve also drifted a little lately and with the kids out for summer, will probably be focusing alot more on the family side of my blog. Until school starts in August, then it will be all tears ;(
have a great weekend mr. modest money.

lol yeah you should figure out what an alexa ranking is. It’s a pretty useful ranking to gauge how well your blog marketing is going. You just need to install the alexa toolbar or widget on your blog to be able to see where you’re at. As of today you’re at 731K.

And good idea to focus more on the family side of things. It makes sense for a blogger to focus more on what’s important in their life. Personally I didn’t purposely set out to jump so much from topic to topic, but I’ve just had different things important in my life at different times. Plus I think it keeps things interesting when there is a bit more personal in a personal finance blog.

Thanks for the mention….OK I have more to say! I really like the ‘flow’ of you blog. I like how you’re not only writing about finance since there are so many other things going on in your life. If you resisted and only tried to write about finance, it would show through your posts. Keep doing what you’re doing!

I’m sure I’ll write more about finance in the future, but for now I admit I’m still really learning a lot. Also it’s nice to be able to talk more personally and connect with more people. I realize that a lot of the people reading early on are also reading a lot of other finance blogs. So I don’t want to overwhelm them with all the same topics rehashed over and over.

Under 50K so fast, nice. Your reader count (in your feedburner widget thingy) is also growing pretty fast. I broke the 100 market earlier this year too, but looks like you’re going to pass me any day now lol. Have fun on your trip :) .

I love going to zoos! Well I just love being around animals and zoos connects you with so many exotic animals that you wouldn’t normally see. 500k in just under 2 months is pretty good, especially with all the career and personal stuff going on in your life lately.

Yeah I should probably do something about these long lists. I guess I could regularly split up the favorites and acknowledgements into separate posts. I had considered it for this post, but decided against since I was going to be away for the weekend. I do still want to be able to mention all my supportive blogger friends though.

If you have a good photo of your cat with her wine, send it over. I’m looking for any excuse to post more animal photos on my blog :)

I’m sure it’s just a temporary plateau. Maybe that’ll give you the motivation to get on twitter finally :)

They do say pets and their owners end up becoming fairly similar. So he must’ve got that from me. I do a pretty similar pose when I’ve had a few too many.
