‘What’s your major?’

It’s a question that will be asked a thousand times during your college career, and before long you’ll be able to answer it in your sleep. But while it may be a dull and repetitive question asked by everyone from your parents’ neighbors to that socially awkward guy at a party who can’t think of a better topic of conversation, this is the most important question you’ll ever be asked. A college degree can lead to a successful career and a life of wealth and happiness, but it’s the subject you choose that really matters.

Many students, of course, go to college to study a subject for which they have a passion, but most study in the hope that their effort will be repaid in the future with higher salaries and greater opportunities. For those people, then, it’s probably a good idea to steer clear of the least paying college degrees. When you were young, you may have said that you wanted to one day be the President or a congressman. In fact, it seems as though such aspirations are right there with being a firefighter or police officer for most young children. I had these aspirations myself once (and still sometimes do).

But as we grow older, we see the reality of politics. It is a career filled with risks, publicity, and being hated by half of the population. Instead of glamorous speeches and massive houses, you are just as likely to end up unemployed. Politics is a complicated career path, and even those who are successful see a variety of major setbacks in their careers.

So is there any money to be made in being a career politician? Maybe, if you are successful. Let’s take a look at some of the financial considerations of a political career. Continue reading

Money Problems $999.99 Cash Giveaway Contest – How Job Stability Affects Finances

Last month I organized a $1000 cash giveaway on behalf of my employer. They offer a marketplace to sell structured settlements or annuities to help you get the most money possible.

For February they are providing a cash giveaway for $999.99. In honor of Jay-Z, the theme of this giveaway contest is 99 problems, specifically money problems.

I could probably list 99 money problems I’ve had over the years, but instead I’d like to focus on the biggest money problem I’m currently facing: having a job in an unstable industry.

In the past, people would secure a job with a company and work there for decades. These days that situation is rare. Instead people are frequently switching jobs and even completely changing careers. With certain industries this scenario is even more common. Sometimes it is just inevitable to see a higher rate of turnover and people jumping from company to company more often. Continue reading

Hey, it’s a tough economy out there- I know PF bloggers realize this more than most. There aren’t enough jobs for the people who want or deserve them, and many Americans don’t have healthcare because they are either denied or they can’t afford it. Even with all this, I’m someone who chooses to work part-time, and I love it! Here’s why:

1.) It preserves my emotional energy: If you’ve read any of my blogs you can probably tell I’m a high-strung person. (I just care! About things!) My passion hasn’t become a full-time endeavor, and it never will unless I allow myself the time and mental bandwidth to pursue it. I love writing and working on my blog, but it takes a significant portion of my time each day. By working a low-stress, part-time job that isn’t tied to any of my “career objectives” I can save my energy for the things that are most important to me. Continue reading
