Early May 2012 Blog Update

Earlier this week I wrote about diversifying online income. So I decided it was about time to start taking some steps to get some income coming in from this blog.

My first step was to start offering freelance website marketing services. Since I have an abundance of experience in that field, I figured it was a good place to start. I actually recently got a keyword research contract via this blog.

It would be much appreciated if you could help me out with sharing that page on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc. The support will not go unnoticed. Thanks!

Or if you’re interested in hiring me for website marketing services, send me an e-mail and we’ll work something out.

Blog Stats Update

The biggest news is that my blog now has a shiny new Google PageRank. Since this blog has only been going for 3 months, I was aiming for PR3, but really expecting PR2. I was ecstatic to see that I jumped up to PR4 Thursday morning. I was surprised, but I know it took a lot of hard work and time to get to that ranking. So don’t feel discouraged if you don’t make such a big leap.

The Alexa Rank improvement is slowing down a lot, but I’m sure that’s normal as you get lower and lower. As of writing this post I’m at 66K. Since I thought it would take a year or longer to get that low, I’m happy.

Facebook likes has been staying steady with a bit of back and forth movement. Since I don’t do anything on there, that’s no surprise.

On the Twitter front it looks like I gained about 25 followers in the past week. By my standards that’s not bad either. I’m going to try to get more active on Twitter and make a push for 500 followers by the end of May.

My Google+ following is starting to build up more. One of these days I’ll have to see what others are doing on there and take some notes.

I’d like to thank all of you for the help with these stats. It may reflect my efforts, but it would be nowhere with your support. If I can ever help you out somehow, don’t be shy. Reach out to me by e-mail anytime!

It was another busy week of getting featured on a lot of blogs. It’s awesome how generous fellow bloggers are. I’m used to marketing e-commerce websites where the competition is fierce and cooperation would be unheard of. So this is a pleasant change of pace. Anyways, here is where Modest Money was mentioned recently:

For some reason I don’t seem to get pingbacks for this kind of stuff. So if I ever miss anything, let me know. It’s never done on purpose. I record these as I find them, but I’m sure I miss some mentions.

Since I started asking random questions in these Friday posts, I’ll continue the trend. Why did you get into blogging? Do you see yourself doing this long term? This is assuming that most visitors here are fellow bloggers. If you don’t blog, feel free to tell us more about yourself in the comments.

    • Thanks Jeremiah. Your blog is coming along nicely too. The site idea you were mentioning via e-mail is bound to do well too. It sounds like you have a great plan there.

  1. You are the master at dropping alexa ranking Jer! Happppppy Friday!

I like these weekly updates, and loved all of those posts as well. Maybe I should just link my fave reads back to this post for this week because I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of these.

I got into blogging because I wanted to a place to share my journey and I wanted to keep myself accountable. I didn’t think that it would lead to me writing about much more than my finances!

    • Finally someone noticed that question and was willing to answer it :) Thanks Erika! We’ve all been enjoying following along with your journey. You always manage to keep things interesting while still keeping it focused on finance.

You’re welcome to link back to this for your fave reads this week, but I’m sure all the bloggers would be even more appreciative if you include them directly. Everyone likes a bit of acknowledgement.

    • Thanks John! I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered it though. I’m off to a pretty good start, but there’s always more to learn. I have learned plenty that I’m sure would help people.

    • Thanks Missy. lol at ‘super whack’. I agree that is pretty damn good progress for 3 months. I guess there’s some advantages to starting this blog while in between daytime jobs.

    • No problem Jordann. It seems that a lot of finance bloggers are looking for a way to keep themselves accountable. I think blogging helps that way to some degree, although a lot of people are even very supportive when you miss your goals or slack off on your budgeting. So there’s often a little too much flexibility in the level of accountability.

    • Thanks man. Good to hear that I’m inspiring people. I just hope they realize all the time and effort that went into building everything up this quick. Some people get frustrated when things aren’t built up as quickly as they’d like.

  2. Wowsers!!! PR4!! Great Job! Keep it up. What other ways are you going to add income? I have received emails about being paid to add links. Anybody care to elaborate on how that works?

    • Thanks Paul. The next stage of monetization is likely going to be affiliate promotion. I think the ad buying agencies were super busy since the PR update hoping to score some cheap deals. I know I had a ton of requests since yesterday. Those links aren’t the safest route though. So I’m not going to rush into anything there. I’ll drop you an e-mail about how it all works.

    • lol I find it funny when I hear about people whose friends and family got sick of hearing them talk about money. I guess this would be a much better outlet. You can talk about it to your heart’s content and everyone will be interested in what you have to say.

  3. I honestly got into blogging because I thought I was going to make money off of it. haha But now I just really enjoy it and it’s a great way for me to document my financial failures/successes. And blogging becomes pretty addictive.

Congrats on the PR4 that’s awesome!

    • There’s nothing wrong with that. I got into blogging to make money too, but it is much more enjoyable than I expected. I’m sure you’ll make some money with your blog eventually, but it can be along grind to get to that point.

    • I wouldn’t say there’s a ton of content from me, but definitely a lot of marketing and networking. It would be nice to be part of a 2 person team. I’m a little envious of the husband wife teams that work together on their blogs.

    • Thanks Karl. Your PR3 is quite impressive too, especially since you also work a full time job. I think that is more of an achievement than me reaching PR4 with how many hours I put into it.

    • I better be leading the pack considering my existing experience and the time I put into this :)
Different people have their own strengths though. You and Michelle are doing way better than me on twitter and rss subscribers. It is cool how many of us started around the same time and how we can motivate each other.

And don’t even mention the Kings! They really are on fire. If they keep it up, they’re definitely the Stanley Cup favorites. It would be nice if either of our teams put up a bit more of a fight though.

  4. Congrats on getting to PR4. That takes a ton of hard work and time. These days, it also speaks to the quality of your writing as well.

I like the idea of diversifying and highly recommend it as well. It’s good to have a variety of income streams, and you method of directly freelancing is a really good way to get some extra income.

    • Thanks Richard. Yes I hope the freelancing service goes well. I’ve offered that kind of thing through another website for a while now. So it will be good to help fellow bloggers with that kind of thing too.

    • Thanks Lance. I’ll have to go back and read all of these posts sometime too. It’ll be interesting to see how the blog progressed over time and what kind of mindset I had back then.
