End of April Blog Update Comments45 Comments

I’ll start off with a personal update on the job front. I didn’t officially land a job yet, but there were some very positive developments. More than one company actually expressed interest in hiring me. That felt pretty satisfying even if I don’t end up working for either company.

After meeting with both companies in person, we’re going back and forth further discussing the opportunity and what I’d want out of it. Hopefully this leads to a job with one of them, but if not I’m confident that I will find something else.

This has got me thinking more of what going back to work would mean for this blog. I don’t intend to be one of the bloggers who just puts his blog completely on hold when getting a job. I plan to keep on blogging, but I’ll have to figure out a new marketing routine. Most likely I will have to cut back on commenting on other blogs. So if I don’t drop by your blog, please don’t take it personally. You’re welcome to reach out to me to discuss other ways we can help each other out.

As for blog stats, I dropped another 10K on my alexa rank. I’m happy to see that it continues to drop as I was really expecting it to go back in the other direction very soon. Maybe that’s still coming soon. Who knows? Alexa rankings aren’t super important to me anyway. It’s kinda motivating to see it drop, but I’m under no illusion that it’s anything crucial.

Facebook likes continues to creep up slowly and it’s now over 800. Since I don’t even know that many people, it’s a cool number. I thought that would start dropping too, but a lot of blogging friends have been nice enough to help out.

Twitter followers is growing each week too. It’s currently at 357 followers. I think I’m gradually learning how to get more out of twitter, but I still feel like I’m not taking full advantage of what can be done on there.

If any of you are on Google+, let’s connect on there too. I admit I’m still putting off getting active there, but some more love may be the motivation I need.

I’ve also been pretty happy about the steady growth of rss subscribers. The numbers are obviously still pretty low compared to the popular blogs out there, but having anyone consistently following along makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

So if you like my blog or just want to help me out, it would be awesome if you could follow/like/subscribe. You’d make my day. And if you don’t I am going to spend the day wallowing is self pity. So the choice is yours :)

Thanks Michelle. I guess it’s doing ok for coming up on 3 months. When I started out I wasn’t expecting these kinds of results so early.

Thanks Jeremiah. Facebook is a little tricky in this niche since a lot of people don’t want to connect this kind of stuff with their personal friends. You may want to consider a giveaway or something to build more of a following on there.

Thanks Sean. I hope so too. They both sound like they could be good opportunities. I was really expecting to be hired by one of them by now, but I need to be patient and I’m sure it will all work out.

70k Alexa ranking – congrats! I hope I can make it down there eventually. I’m creeping down at about 1000 spots/day.

Congrats on the job front. Let us know when you land one of those gigs! I’m sure it will take a lot of pressure off and be a huge relief!

Have a great weekend Jeremy and thanks for the shout out!

Thanks Jason. I thought it would take much longer to get my alexa ranking this low. I’m sure your alexa ranking will keep dropping too. You just need some more great posts like the series on considering selling your wife’s wedding ring. Then you’ll get there even sooner.

And yeah I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated regarding the job. There is a lot of pressure to get something soon to get my finances headed in the right direction.

Thanks man. I’ll try not to skimp on the quality of posts when I go back to work. That shouldn’t be too tough since I already have a much more laid back posting schedule compared to some bloggers out there. I hope to eventually beef it up when the blog gains more momentum.

Good luck on the job, and don’t worry about the blog… I have a full time job, 3 kids and I still find time to blog… just not as much as when I worked from home. ;-)

Wow that is a full plate. I definitely can’t say I have that kind of responsibility load. So I’m sure I’ll manage. I’ll just have to cut back from the amount of work I’m doing these days.

Thanks Miss T. I do hope the momentum keeps building once I go back to work. I’m just going to have to think more long term.

Great job, Jeremy. Keep those cool posts coming, and thank you for the support that you’ve given me on my blog.

Congratulations on your Alexa ranking. You’re way below 100,000, and going strong. That’s big. have a great weekend.

I think the prospects look pretty good too. Although they are doing essentially the same kind of work, they are very different opportunities. I think I may have narrowed it down to the one that will be the best for me though.

800 Facebook Likes is pretty impressive. I thought I was doing well with my 73!

So because you’ve stopped commenting on my blog BEFORE getting a job, should I take it personally? j/k LOL

    Best of luck!

Hey Edward. Actually I stopped commenting because your feed stopped notifying me of new posts. It seems to have suddenly mass updated today though. So I’ll try to stop by more. If the feeds aren’t notifying me of who’s got new posts, it’s hard to keep track of anyone I missed. I had been trying to scale back a bit this week with job interviews and extra freelance work.

By the way, 73 facebook likes is pretty good for a new blog, especially with the break you had to take. I wouldn’t be that high if it weren’t for the ipad2 giveaway I took part in.

That’s strange. Hopefully you can get to the bottom of that since your rss feed is quite important for getting fellow bloggers to visit your site.

Good luck on the job front Jeremy.

As to the time you get to spend on your blog, I don’t think people will mind too much if you don’t pop in as often. I know that was the first thing I did when I started working again. There is only some much you can do and you have to prioritise.

Some people have told me I should outsource some of the blogging chores like commenting and post writing but I couldn’t bear have someone else in control of those tasks.

Thanks Sire. The reason I give warning about commenting less is that I know a large portion of my traffic is fellow bloggers. Since my blog is fairly new, I realize that a lot comment here because I try to return the favor.

I understand what you mean about wanting to be in control of post writing and commenting. It takes a lot of trust to let someone else represent your blog. I’ve been accepting guest posts, but I do get some negative reaction sometimes.

My opinion is to put the job first. Especially when you’re new, you’ve really got to pull more than your own weight. But the blog doesn’t have to go anywhere either. You can keep using guest posts to fill out the week and making random comments on other blogs (even if the quantity drops) to attract others.

Yep I definitely intend to put the job first. This blog won’t be paying the bills anytime soon. I realize that it’s much more of a long term project. I’ll still be putting time into this to keep the momentum going, but my off-site efforts will definitely be cut back.

I should probably be doing the same with pre-writing some posts. I started out with a ton of posts all queued, but then I got too caught up in marketing that I started to write my posts as they were needed. It’ll be more important to do that when I go back to working. Then there are bound to be days when I just need a break.

Glad to hear you have potential employers! 70K that’s crazy, good job with that. You have worked hard and it shows.

Thanks for the mention! Have a great weekend.

Thank you Paul. It did take a lot of hard work to get this far. So it’s nice to have some kind of metric that reflects that effort.
