End of August 2012 Blog Update

It’s been another very good week around here. I’ve been getting out a lot more lately and as a result haven’t been putting as much time into this blog.

So I apologize if I didn’t make it over to your blog to comment this week. Since a lot of us are very busy, I’m always up for helping each other in different ways instead if you’re open to it.

The main reason I’ve been extra busy this week is that I’ve been getting into dating more. Actually it’s been one special girl in particular lately. I was pretty tempted to write a post about the situation with her finances, but now that I’ve told her my blog name I don’t want to risk offending. Instead I’ll have to see if one of the popular blogs would accept it as a guest post where she won’t find it lol. Does anyone else find it super awkward knowing someone is learning some of your secrets you’ve shared on your blog semi-anonymously?

Anyways, she’s a great girl and in case she’s reading this, I don’t hold her financial situation against her. It does take some time to really accept though.

On a totally different topic, can anyone help me out with my best credit card offers page? I’m doing this movement where I get lots of other bloggers to mention it for my own personal gain :) Oh wait, I guess I can’t disguise credit card promotion that way. Fine, I’ll help you out too if you can help. Who wouldn’t want Modest Money owing them a favor?

Ok enough rambling, onto where this blog was mentioned recently…

Modest Money Around The Web

I’m too lazy to check past acknowledgements, but this might be my biggest acknowledgement list yet. I guess once you get nominated as a finalist for 2 Plutus awards all kinds of people want to be your friend. That and I’ve got some awesome, supportive blogging friends. Thank you everyone. I’m going to have to save up and buy you all a drink at FinCon in 2013.

What did I do to deserve getting mentioned on so many great blogs? So at what stage am I supposed to turn into one of those egotistical bloggers who isn’t willing to help anyone but himself? It seems like a lot of the big bloggers eventually evolve into that.

No I don’t ever want to end up like that. I may sell out with more and more ads over time, but I’ll always try to help out my readers and blogging friends. If I ever start slipping, please send me an angry e-mail or call me out on twitter.

Never do I want to become the Lebron James of the finance blogosphere. Speaking of basketball though, how about the Lakers?! I know it’s old news now, but they’re gonna dominate. Down with the king!

    • I probably will write about it, but just not on here. I’m definitely looking at finances more now that I’m a finance blogger and at that age where buying a home and settling down is coming soon.

    • She was pretty hesitant to tell me at first, but I did appreciate her honesty. It’s a lot better than finding out about someone’s finances well into a relationship. I’m sure you have been quite busy with the new job and new dog. I’d love to get a dog sometime soon, but it’s definitely going to have to wait until my blog gets to a more self sustained level.

    • Well I can’t very well run a blog called Modest Money and turn into one of those jerks that is always bragging about how much money they’re making. The only thing those people are helping is their own ego. The people I respect a lot more are the ones who become successful but remain true to their values.

  1. Good luck with your dating situation. I can’t imagine having to date again. It’s very hard to share poor financial decisions. My husband had a really hard time when I first started thinking about this blog. It really does seem to help to have it out in the open. Maybe we’re not as likely to go back to our old ways. I really appreciate all the tips and love for us rookies. I probably won’t ever know as much about blogging and online ventures as you do, but if I do learn something and have modest success, I’ll try to pass that along to newbies.

    • I’m glad you are going to take that approach too. I realize I have way more website management and marketing experience than most bloggers. So it’s really no skin off my back to pass that on, especially to blogger friends who have been so supportive.

As for the girl I’m dating, I’m trying to convince her to start a blog herself because I know it would help her a lot. The accountability and support you get is huge.

  2. I think we’ve all been busy :) summer is winding up, kids are going back to school, there’s house stuff to be done… etc. etc. I’m happy thing sare going well for you and that you’re not intending to turn into one of ‘those’ bloggers. It’s refreshing, some of ‘those’ bloggers feel so unreachable. Bleh

    • Tell me about it. Some act like their shit doesn’t stink. I actually had a situation with one of those almighty bloggers the other day. I had done some favors for him in the past, but when I asked for a return favor he made up some condescending excuses. I think I’d rather stick to dealing with the newer bloggers since they’re just such better people to deal with in general.

  3. He he, you’ve given us some good lines of conversation for tonight :p. We’ll escuse the absence from commenting – plus there was our whole issue with the pre published post not making it to Google reader again…

    • Oh shit, I’ve got to talk about this stuff in person now?? ;)
I’m sure we’ll have plenty to talk about tonight, especially once the drinks get flowing lol.

    • Thanks SS. Your blog has really been progressing well lately. I think your honeymoon must have really refreshed you to take your blog to the next level. I’d love to write a post for your blog sometime. Unfortunately I have to add it to my list of rain-checks though since I’ve been strapped for time lately.

    • I think she still needs some warming up to the idea of her writing about it. I’ll convince her eventually though. In the meantime I really want to write about my side of it.

  4. There is a point of diminishing returns for mentioning mentions. There’s 34 this week. I’m sure that list took a while to type up. What happens when it’s 50? 100? You’ll wind up with a list that few people will actually read, and gives very little link juice out. At that point, you really aren’t helping anybody out and making more work for yourself.

I believe that’s why bigger blogs don’t take the time to acknowledge mentions. It’s not ego or attitude; it’s simple pain vs. benefit.

    • For sure, there will become a point where this just isn’t worthwhile for everyone involved. That’s not the thing I was getting at about established bloggers though. Yes they rarely acknowledge any mentions, but many of them become rather egotistical overall. They just think they are above helping out new bloggers. It really doesn’t take me much work to keep an active text document of all mentions. The work involved isn’t a big deal, especially knowing I’m giving my own links more link juice.

      • I don’t have a lot of experience with bigger name bloggers, but most of what I have has been positive. J. Money is one of the handful of bloggers I consider a friend. Ramit Sethi has responded to my emails, as has Adam Baker.

The biggest name I’ve ever had any issue with is the one you’ve referenced for some of your interesting search queries. But my opinion is that his attitude has nothing to do with his popularity or success.

    • Well now that they Lakers are stacked Lebron can forget about this dream of creating a dynasty. I just can’t stand that guy, or really anyone with his kind of mentality. I guess Kobe is up there too, but I gotta cheer for the west coast team. Plus they’ve got BC boy Steve Nash now.

I think they do give out a little trophy for the Plutus awards, but I won’t be there. So if by some miracle I did win, I’m not sure what they’d do. I’d pay for postage if they were going to mail it out though. I don’t see myself winning either category though. I have a feeling I know who will win those.

    • I’ve already told her that I’m tempted to write about it and she doesn’t seem to mind. Still I’d want to publish it somewhere that she wouldn’t find it. That way I can be a bit more open about it all. Enjoy your long weekend too!

    • I guess that phenomenon isn’t exclusive to blogging. In all kinds of industries when people become successful they lose touch with who they were before. It’s unfortunate, but I guess it says a lot about who they really are inside.

    • lol I owe so many people guest posts now. I actually have never even written a guest post for anyone yet. So one of these days I’ll have to crank out some serious writing.

Thanks for the heads up about my credit card page. I’ll check that out right now.

  5. That’s great you and your date are getting to know each other’s financial situations up front rather than finding out much later. I don’t think it’s necessary to go into details at first, but after a few dates it wouldn’t be too intrusive to ask each other broad questions around job security and future financial plans. I probably would feel a little awkward if someone I know in real life was stalking me on my blog and found out for example how much debt I have and all that, so I try to be careful and remain anonymous for the most part. Your blog got mentioned a lot because you deserve it of course, there’s no other explanation.
    Liquid recently posted..Alternative InvestmentsMy Profile

    • How much debt you have? You mean how well you are doing with investments. And yeah it’s more of a 3rd or 4th date topic, but she did bring it up first which I really respect. I don’t mind too much that she’s reading my blog, but it makes me cringe a bit thinking to what I shared in some older posts. She was already quoting about how I was looking for someone younger, more intelligent and more good looking than my ex lol.

    • Thank you Miss T. Things are looking good so far, but we’ll see where things go. The Plutus award finalist thing was nice, but not expecting much beyond that. Just being a finalist is enough for me.

    • Don’t worry, I don’t think she reads much of my blog yet. Definitely not all the comments anyway. I was rather impressed about how open she was about her situation too. I do think I’d be able to help her out a lot, especially with everything I’ve been learning from fellow bloggers.

  6. I try not to share too many of my secrets! But it is weird. If you really like her, I might not post about her finances without her permission…even semi-anonymously in a guestpost. I don’t think it would be a good idea even if you only liked her a little bit. I like Michelle’s idea of asking her to do it. :)
    femmefrugality recently posted..CribsMy Profile

    • No I wouldn’t be doing that without her permission. I’ve already mentioned the possibility to her and she seemed fine with it. I guess I’ll double check just in case though.

    • lol no I wouldn’t risk a relationship just for a good post topic. That would be pretty low. I’m just not sure I should share the details with any of my friends and family who check out my blog.

  7. Good luck with the dating. Hope it all goes well for you. I must say that I hate the Lakers, though. I swear they catch every break in the league. Lamar Odom wants to leave after the botched Cris Paul trade which creates the trade exception they used to sign Steve Nash. Then Orlando essentially gives away Howard for a bunch of bad contracts, and the lakers didn’t even have to take any of Orlando’s bad contracts as part of the deal. Ugh. God must be a Lakers fan.
Justin @ The Family Finances recently posted..Friends of the Family: Labor Day Weekend EditionMy Profile

    • If they catch every break they would’ve landed Cris Paul last season too. The trades in the NBA are a bit strange. It seems the league controls where players go much more than in other sports. They must realize just how popular the Lakers are compared to most other teams. I could see why someone would hate the Lakers though. They do have a fair amount of arrogance and have a pretty stacked team.
