End of June 2012 Blog Update
38 Comments
Another Friday and by now you must all know what that means…another Modest Money blog update
Instead of a real post, you get to read about some random happenings around here and then go through my favorite posts on other blogs for some quality content.
First of all I want to remind everyone to vote for your favorite Canadian personal finance blogs and Canadian investing blogs. Both of those polls be unofficially wrapping up at the end of this month.
The poll for the top Canadian investing blog is extremely tight. It will come down to the wire between 5 or 6 blogs. The top Canadian personal finance blogs poll turned into a 2 horse race, but there is still time for some blogs to move up the list. Now would be a good time to ask your followers to vote before the poll is over.
I haven’t decided on the number of ‘winners’ yet, but I will be featuring the top 3-5 blogs from each list in a special Canada Day post.
The only other blog updates to mention are my Alexa Ranking getting very close to dropping below 45K and the number of RSS subscribers continuing to grow. Thanks to everyone who has subscribed and regularly visits this blog. It’s nice knowing I’m not just rambling to myself and my cats
I also have one personal update to share that I will be going into further detail on Monday. My cat Trip (the one in the photo) has been under the weather recently. I took him into the vet earlier this week and found out that he had a stone in his bladder. After a surgery, a couple days at the vet for monitoring and a 4 figure vet bill, I think he’s all better. Poor guy
So no complaining about cat photos this week.
Modest Money Around The Web
A big thanks to all the bloggers who mentioned Modest Money on their blog recently. If you want to get on my good side, links and social shares go a long way. Just be sure to let me know if I don’t already regularly comment on your blog.

Ok I really need to stop getting carried away with these link lists. I keep telling myself that I’ll split them up into 2 posts when there are lots of mentions. Then I get into it and find some mentions that I didn’t notice during the week. And then I remember some other good posts from this week.
It turns out my blogging tips series has been fairly popular so far. Since I like writing those posts and helping bloggers out, it’s going to be continuing for the foreseeable future. Does anyone have suggestions for specific topics to cover? Or does anyone want to contribute a future installment of that series? It would be great to get someone else’s perspective every 2 or 3 weeks. I know some of you have been blogging far longer than me.

Congrats on the Alexa ranking drop! I’m continuing to hover around 71k.
Thanks Jason. It does take some extra tricks to keep dropping once you get below 100k. Just keep at it and search engine traffic will pick up which should drop your Alexa further.
I am glad Trip is feeling better. He reminds me of the cat I used to have. I love the fluff.
Thanks so much for including my article this week. I was really hoping to stir the pot and get some discussion going.
I hope you have a great long weekend.
Miss T @ Prairie Eco-Thrifter recently posted..Should You Consider Investing Your Money?
Yeah I’m glad he’s doing better even though it cost so much.
And no problem mentioning your post, although I admit I do tend to mention more bloggers who do link round ups themselves
Going green is pretty important, even though some of the choices do cost more money until more people adopt them.
Thanks for the mention one bother websites. The vet bill is exactly why we build emergency funds.
Yes luckily I had cash to cover it. I’m still not a firm believer in emergency funds though. By having that cash sit around not collecting better interest I still lost out on some good potential. If I had a more secure job, I would keep a very minimal emergency fund.
Nice list! Now for me to wave goodbye to productivity today, haha.
Newbie blogger info request for your series: Finding and succesffully submitting to carnivals, linky parties and whatnot.
Anne @ Unique Gifter recently posted..Creative Cash: Word Search eTransfer
Thanks for the suggestion Anne. At least someone read that bottom paragraph lol. That’s a bit of a tricky subject to write about though. Technically I don’t think Google would like those kinds of things very much. So it may be best not to draw extra attention to them. If you need tips though, feel free to e-mail me about that.
Congrats on the rankings. Maybe your cat can get Obamacare? Have a great weekend!

I don’t think my Canadian cat would qualify
I do wonder if we’ll ever see a day when pets are required to have some kind of health insurance.
I think Obama will count Canadian votes too. Not sure he knows where the borders are.
Glad to hear your cat is all better.
Looking forward to hearing the announced blogging winners!
John recently posted..Never Give Up
We’ve essentially been a US state for a long time. It’s just too important for out government to suck up to yours. So you guys pretty much run the show and we just nod our heads and follow along.
There is such a HUGE industry of pet health insurance! My bro is in vet school… therefore I wholeheartedly support the purchase of pet health insurance

Anne @ Unique Gifter recently posted..Kitchenaid Standmixer: Get the Best Price
I wish someone had really convinced me about that a month ago. Now it’ll likely be a long time until they need anything expensive again. Their more expensive food better help anyway.
I’m sorry to hear about Trip
. Glad he’s doing ok!
Congrats on the Alexa drop. I can’t wait to get into the 5 digit rankings! And keep it coming with the blog tips. Newbies like can realy glean from your experience

Jacob @ iHeartBudgets recently posted..Mrs. iHB: How To Save Money – Kids Clothing
Yeah he’s much better, but the other cat is a little pissed that he’s back lol.
I know it’s just a matter of time until your Alexa is 5 digits. You’ve dropped down quite quickly so far and you do write really good content. From there it mostly comes down to doing lots of marketing and getting more active on social media.
Thanks for the mention. I got you in this week’s link-up for sure. Glad Trip is doing better ! Sucks about the bill but it’s worth it. I’d do the same for my dog!
Sorry for the short comment, I’m on my phone!
Have a good weekend!
From Shopping to Saving recently posted..Planning A (Frugal!) Proposal
Just don’t get hit by any volleyballs while on your phone this time lol. Yeah I think Trip is still in some discomfort from the surgery, but I think he’s doing way better. He better be after that hefty vet bill. Enjoy your time with the family. And good luck to your sister’s team.
Hey, thanks for including my post, Jeremy! I would be honored to give you a post about blogging, but I’ve been at it for only 5 months myself. In fact, you are one of my go-to guys when I have a question about blogging–doh! I would love to give you a guest post on another topic sometime though.
Michelle recently posted..What to Do When You Get a Traffic Ticket
Yes you are definitely welcome to submit a regular guest post sometime. I assume it’s best for you to wait until your sons are back in school. Feel free to send over a guest post anytime though.
Sorry about Trip! Hopefully he starts to feel better soon–it’s always amazing at the change in their personalities once they get sick.
Thanks for the mention and have a great weekend! (Ps. You spelled Friday not Firday hahaha)
bogofdebt recently posted..The End of June’s Friday Link Love
lol I’m not cool enough to rock the Firday lingo lol. Trip is feeling way better already. He’s just a little itchy where they shaved him. Enjoy your weekend too.
I imagine that was as painful for Trip as kidney stones or something for humans. Glad he’s making a speedy recovery
. Thanks for the link. Have a nice long weekend. Euro cup final is this Sunday. I don’t know who I should root for.
Yup I’m sure it wasn’t good for him to have that stone. At least it was found before it got worse. As for Euro Cup, now that Germany is out, I gotta root for my other go to team from Fifa Soccer for Nintendo64…Spain. Then again I do really love Italian food….decisions decisions.
Hey, Jeremy. That’s good stuff with your Alexa ranking dropping below 45K. You’ll be in four digits in no time.
I’m glad that Trip is doing well after his surgery. He’s a handsome-looking devil, and must be a lot of fun to hang with.
Thank you for the generous mention. It really means a lot to me. Have a nice weekend, and enjoy Canada Day.
4 digits?? lol! wisebread is barely at 4 digits. One of these days Alexa will realize my blog isn’t really that popular.
And yeah Trip is a pretty awesome cat. He’s one of those friendly cats that will jump up into a strangers lap or walk around the room meowing hi to everyone.
Thanks for the Canada Day recognition too. Not too long until Independence Day either.
Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for the blog mention! Great job on the Alexa ranking.
Have a great long weekend!
No problem Kanwal. Enjoy your long weekend too, even though you just got back from vacation
Glad to hear your cat is feeling better. You are showing up for me as 44,805. I guess today was the last bump you needed to break the 45k barrier. GRS is a little above 12k, so you only have 33k to go to beat one of the biggest names in PF blogging!
Yup I always write posts at least the day before. There’s no way I’m getting up before 6 AM to write a post anyway. I kinda figured I might be under 45K when this went live but I didn’t want to jinx myself. I have no dreams of ever overtaking GRS though. I’ll settle for 13K lol.
Jeremy,
Great job with the Alexa. Soon you’ll set the record for the fastest Alexa rank drop. Keep it up.
Thanks for the mention as well, hope you have a fabulous long weekend.
Cheers!
Eddie
Well if I knew there was a record to shoot for I wouldn’t have gotten a job lol. Not that I could compete with some big startup company or the SEO niche blogs. Enjoy your long weekend too Eddie.
Glad to hear your cat is feeling better. My mother-in-law’s dog has been kind of under the weather lately as well. He’s a 15-year old Dachsund with arthritis, but he usually gets around pretty well.
Congrats on the Alexa ranking as well. I just got under 400k, which is exciting for me. One post idea about blogging could be on your opinion of whether it’s better to write and schedule posts in advance or just write posts as you think of them…
Justin @ The Family Finances recently posted..Can You Find Good Deals at a Flea Market?
I guess owners of older dogs know all about these kinds of expenses. It’s definitely the most I’ve ever spent on my cats though.
Thank you for the post suggestion. I’ll have to think about that some more and see how I could turn that into an entire post. Posting time/day in general would probably work well.
Congrats on your alexa rank’s continuing drop. Mine has been dropping steadily as well but I am very far behind you. I’ll just be happy when I cross the 200k mark!
Lance@MoneyLife&More recently posted..Weekly Goal Update #10
Thanks Lance. Good luck on the 200k mark. It’s funny how you can tell right away when someone is in on the ykz challenge when they mention 200k Alexa. I’m glad I don’t have to chase anyone else’s goals like that.
I’m so sorry to hear about your cat but glad he’s better now! And I’d never complain about cute pet pictures, keep ‘em coming
.
Thanks for mentioning our blog!
Good to hear cause I do have more to post. Then I’ll have to get pet photos from readers or finally get a camera again.
