You don’t have to look very hard to discover how many people are out there selling insurance. You can look through the phone book, or do a search on Google, only to find yourself swimming in a sea of phone numbers, addresses, and websites that don’t get you any closer than you were before.

With all the options available, finding the right insurance agent can seem like an impossible task. How do you know if he or she is the right person for the job, and how do you know that person is looking out for your own interests?

Common sense would tell you to find an agent that specializes on the type of insurance you’re looking to purchase. If you’re looking for auto insurance, you want an auto insurance agent. As an agent, I’ve had people lie about their medical history; and no matter how many times they think they can get away with it, they’re always found out.

They need to look at what it was you had, how long you’ve had it, and what procedures were done to treat it. They also have to look at what drugs you might have taken, as well as what you’re taking now. Sometimes they’ll have a medical professional meet with you to check your height, weight, and blood pressure. They also might take a blood or urine sample. These types of exams are done in special circumstances. So, it doesn’t happen that often.

As an agent, I can’t tell you how important it is to do a check on any agent you are thinking about working with. Agents should carry their license at all times, so they have proof of their credentials. But as a consumer you should always check with your state’s Department of Insurance to see if there are any complaints, investigations, or past violations. Insurance agents have to abide by all regulations in the state in which they are currently working, or they could be subject to a hearing or have their license revoked. There is a report of any past or present investigations for each agent that has been licensed in your state. That is an invaluable resource in making sure you are working with someone legitimate.

Most importantly, you should always ask questions, as it is not only important to find a policy that suits your needs but also to understand the policy you are planning to purchase. You agent will be the best resource in getting the information you need.
