First of all, this offer is only available to Canadians. So any US readers might as well jump to the next post. I’ll try to make it up to you 🙂
I’ve actually been meaning to sign up for an ING Direct account for a while now. I figured it would be a good spot for a small emergency fund. Apparenly I’ve been waiting so long that they went and changed their name to Tangerine.
Since I was in need of some extra money I decided to finally give in and sign up for an account. The ‘extra money’ was to be as a result of their introductory offer for new accounts.
To be honest I was originally expecting a $25 bonus and for how little time it was going to take me, I was happy to take the offer. From what I had heard when someone refers you, both of you get a $25 bonus.
So then how did I get $125 instead?? Did I open 5 accounts in various aliases?? I have no idea if that would work and I don’t advise you go that route.
No what I did was completely legit. When I signed up for my account I noticed that they had a limited time promotion running until July 31st, 2014. When you open a new account with at least $250, they’ll give you another $50 bonus.
Again I thought I was done with the bonuses, but then I realized I had accidentally opened a checking account instead of a savings account. When I went to go and add that to my account I was surprised to see that I was going to get another $50 bonus for it. I assumed it was a mistake and only available if I didn’t have the checking account. Yesterday that 2nd bonus showed up in my account.
So with the small amount of time it took me to open up these 2 accounts I made $125. It turns out that if I had been able to switch my pay checks to go directly to my account I would’ve earned yet another $50. Yes I guess I didn’t do my due diligence before signing up.
With all the bonuses already in my account, I could simply withdraw the money now and walk away. In my case it makes some sense to have an extra stash of cash though. So for now I’ll just leave that money alone.
Also here’s a screenshot of my Tangerine account to show what my $250 turned into:
