BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ: BBRY)
Years ago, BlackBerry was the best thing since sliced bread. When smartphones first became popular, BBRY was one of the companies that helped to start the trend. However, over the years, their dominance diminished. These days, BlackBerry brand cell phones account for less than 1% of the entire smartphone market. While the company has changed its focus quite a bit this year, it seems as though it’s taking another shot at cornering the smartphone space. Today, we’ll talk about what they’ve done recently, what their plans seem to be for the future and what we can expect to see from BBRY stock moving forward.
BlackBerry Hops On The Android Train
Are you wondering what happened years ago that made BlackBerry cell phones seemingly fall off of the face of the earth? Well, the answer is relatively simple. The company’s competition started making bigger, better and stronger operating systems. Ultimately, Android and iOS phones took over the smartphone market. Unfortunately, in the mobile OS space, BBRY simply couldn’t keep up, and it seems as though they’ve realized that. So, the company recently released its newest phone, known as Priv. Many believe that this is going to be the phone that puts BBRY back on the map.
So, what is it about Priv that has investors and consumers so excited? The phone uses the same, state of the art hardware that BBRY is known for. However, when it comes to software, it’s something completely new to the brand. Priv is running on the Android operating system. This gives consumers the ability to keep the Android operating system they know and love while taking advantage of BlackBerry’s innovation in mobile hardware. It’s like a match made in heaven.
BlackBerry Seems To Be Following Up On Priv With More Android
While BBRY hasn’t publicly announced their plans to move forward with more Android phones, a leak from a reliable source says that’s exactly what they plan on doing. CrackBerry, a company that follows BlackBerry and big tech announced that the Android phone that’s next on BlackBerry’s list is code named Vienna. While there haven’t been many details with regard to Vienna released, there was one key difference between Vienna and Priv that has been released. According to the leak, Vienna will have a permanent QWERTY keyboard, rather than the one that slides out as we’ve seen with Priv.
Is BlackBerry Making The Right Move Here?
In my opinion, hopping on the Android gravy train is a great thing for BBRY. Ultimately, Android is one of the world’s most popular operating systems for smartphones, and we know that when consumers become attached to their operating system, they don’t generally want to change. So, offering Android-based phones should lead to higher sales. However, don’t take my word for it… just look at the data. Upon the release of Priv, deliveries ended up getting delayed because there was such a high demand for the phone! That’s a good problem to have.
What We Can Expect To See Moving Forward
If you would have asked me what we could expect to see from BBRY a year ago, I would have had an entirely different answer for you. However, based on recent developments from the company, I’ve got incredibly high hopes for what we can expect to see. Ultimately, the new direction the company has taken with regard to its phones is likely to send sales skyrocketing. Outside of the Android-driven positivity from BBRY, I’ve also been impressed with their movements into a dominant position with regard to the internet of things. All in all, signs seem to be pointing in the positive direction for BBRY moving forward.
